Tax liability from the age of 18
In Switzerland, tax liability generally begins at the age of majority. Even if you have little or no income as a student, you are required to file a tax return as soon as you receive the request from the tax office. In many cantons, however, taxes are only charged if there is an annual net income of around CHF 15,000 to 20,000.
Why filling out is worthwhile
Many students miss out on money because they don't file a tax return. By declaring your bank accounts, you can 35% withholding tax reclaim interest income. In addition, deductions for professional expenses or insurance premiums often mean that taxes you have already paid from part-time jobs or internships are refunded by the state.
Important deductions for studying
You can claim various costs to reduce your tax burden. This includes expenses for commuting to work (e.g. public transport subscription), food outside during working hours, and course and examination fees for further training. Some of your health insurance premiums can also usually be deducted from taxable income.
Deadlines and documents
The tax return must usually be submitted by March 31 are submitted, although extension of deadlines online is almost always easy. Have your salary statements, bank receipts at the end of the year, the study certificate and receipts for your health insurance and professional expenses ready to fill out.
